Findlay Creek Conservation Area
Discover the beauty of Leitrim Wetland by walking the Findlay Creek Boardwalk, a 900-meter path that winds through this provincially significant wetland just south of the Findlay Creek community.
Historically, Leitrim Wetland is home to an extraordinary variety of habitats, including marshland, cedar swamps and a site of a calcareous fen—a rare type of wetland characterized by non-acidic peat fed by cold, mineral-rich groundwater. This area fosters a unique community of plants and animals and has been designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. This area is a headwater feature of Findlay Creek, an important cool water stream in the South Nation watershed.
Don’t forget your binoculars! Leitrim wetland is home to over 90 bird species throughout the year and an additional 40 species during migration, making it an excellent birdwatching destination.
Leitrim wetland was donated by the Kellam Family to South Nation Conservation in 1998 through Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program. Ever since, SNC has worked to monitor and preserve the ecological integrity of this site through a variety of habitat conservation and restoration efforts.
