Tree Planting

Growing a Healthier Landscape — Together 🌱

Trees play a vital role in protecting water quality, improving soil health, supporting wildlife, and strengthening our local communities. Through SNC’s Tree Planting Grants, landowners can access financial support to help offset the costs of planting trees and shrubs on their property.

Many of SNC’s tree planting services are made possible through the generous support of funding partners. These partnerships allow us to deliver affordable, high-quality tree planting projects that create long-lasting environmental benefits across the watershed.

How the Program Works

SNC works with a range of partners to support tree planting initiatives that align with shared environmental priorities, such as:

  • Improving water quality in local rivers and streams
  • Reducing soil erosion and runoff
  • Enhancing biodiversity and wildlife habitat
  • Increasing climate resilience and carbon storage

Funding contributions help cover costs related to tree stock, project planning, and planting services, making it easier for landowners to take action.

SNC also offers free site visits to help landowners explore tree planting and restoration opportunities on their property. If you’re not sure which program or funding source is best suited to your land, simply share your project ideas with our team — we’ll work with you to identify the best options to support your property goals.

Through a partnership with the City of Ottawa, SNC administers the Ottawa Tree Replacement Program to provide additional cost-share support for trees on private property that have been:

  • Impacted by invasive species (such as Emerald Ash Borer), or

When you plant your trees, please follow these steps:

  1. First soak the roots in water.
  2. Use a shovel and make a "L" shaped cut in the ground.
  3. Peel back the soil and place the seedling into the ground, ensure that all of the roots are buried and the soil reaches the root collar.
  4. Once the seedling is in the ground, hold onto the top of it and stomp around the base to ensure the ground is packed tight and there are no air pockets.
  5. Water the seedling, ensure there are no air bubbles coming up from the ground.
